Tucker Ratcliff, Choral Director

Picture
Tucker Ratcliff was appointed Choral Director at Grissom High School after receiving his Bachelor of Music degree in Choral Music Education from the University of Montevallo (’17).  Presently, Ratcliff works with the Women’s and Men’s Choirs, along with the Concert and top auditioned ensemble, the Chamber Choir.  Under his direction, all 4 choirs have been awarded Superior and Excellent ratings at State Choral Performance Assessments.  During his tenure as choral director, Grissom Choir has performed alongside the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, on the Carnegie Hall stage, and would have made its international, European debut performing in Vienna, Olomouc, & Prague this past spring.

As an active member of many regional, state, and national organizations, including: NAfME, AMEA, and AVA, Ratcliff currently serves as the Webmaster & Newsletter Editor for the Alabama chapter of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), as well as Treasurer for the Huntsville Choral Directors Association (HCDA).

Mr. Ratcliff gets his zest for life and his inspiration for music from the great outdoors. His favorite ways to fulfill this need include hiking, biking, and camping with his wife, son, and family. He finds that this cycle of taking in the natural world and putting it into the music he loves continuously propels him towards new heights.

Women's Choir

The Women's Choir (Mixed Chorus I) is primarily for incoming freshmen women (or singers), however it is open to 10th-12th grade seasoned women. These women have been singing in middle school or are looking to join for the first time. As many of these singers have just been through a voice change, we spend a lot time focuses on vocal technique, so singing is a comfortable activity for them. This ensemble focuses on singing 2-3 part women's choral literature, while learning proper vocal technique, music theory, and sight-singing. At the end of each year, all women are auditioned for Concert Choir, and have the opportunity to audition for Chamber Choir.

Chamber Choir

The Chamber Choir (Mixed Chorus IV) is our premiere, advanced ensemble of Grissom Choir made up of students in 10th-12th grade. Each year, students are auditioned and selected based upon their prepared performance in an audition, attitude during the previous school year, sight-reading and a variety of other areas. These students are not only involved in choir, but are also heavily involved in the other 3 fine arts electives (band, theatre, dance), and other areas of our school community, such as sports, AP courses and more.  These students perform early choral music, chamber and madrigal genres, a capella pop & jazz selections, along with a variety 8-part harmony repertoire, while also performing alongside the Concert Choir. They perform at all concerts, competitions, and all other school/public events (Baccalaureate, Graduation, Grissom Choral Festival, Recruitment Tours).  At the end of each year, these students are re-auditioned for the next year.
