The Alabama Vocal Association (AVA) All-State Choral Festival is an auditioned opportunity for students seeking to perform with the state’s finest high school singers. Auditions are held before a panel of judges at a designated host school. Students auditioning are responsible for purchasing their own audition music and practice tracks.
The $50 audition registration fee is NOT included in each student’s Basic Support Fee and must be paid by students who choose to audition. Students selected for the festival are responsible for an additional $50 participation fee, as well as hotel accommodations (which must be reserved independently), meals, and other personal travel expenses.
Three All-State ensembles are offered: SSA, TTBB, and SATB. Students selected for the festival spend a weekend in March or April rehearsing with a distinguished guest clinician before presenting a final concert at the host venue. Students are expected to learn their audition music outside of their regularly scheduled choir class using the provided music and practice tracks. Uniforms are required for the performance.
The AVA Outstanding Choral Student competition recognizes exceptional junior and senior choir students. Nominees are selected by the choir director and must have participated in the Alabama All-State Choral Festival during the previous year. Students prepare two contrasting vocal selections, along with a résumé and photograph, for the district audition. District winners advance to the state-level competition, where they audition alongside the other district representatives for the honor of being named Alabama’s Outstanding Choral Student.
